The Inspiration

Chatsworth is widely believed to have been the inspiration for Mr. Darcy’s Pemberley, which Jane Austen describes as “a large, handsome stone building, standing well on rising ground, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills.” Two centuries later, Chatsworth famously played the role of Pemberley in the 2005 film adaptation of the book, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

Discover how Chatsworth may have inspired Jane Austen’s Pemberley in Pride and Prejudice.

This escape invites you to take your own place in the story, and experience ‘Pemberley’ first-hand through its architecture and collections, landscape, food and stories. In June, Chatsworth is also hosting the Regency Festival, an annual celebration of Jane Austen and the Regency period.
